Madurai: The Madurai District Collector has promulgated prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), corresponding to the erstwhile Section 144 of the CrPC, in the Thiruparankundram area. The order, issued in view of an emergent law and order situation, is effective immediately until further notice to ensure public safety and maintain peace.
The orders came after tension escalated in Thiruparankundram evening when hundreds of cadres from various Hindu outfits attempted to march up the hill, demanding that the Karthigai deepam be lit at the stone pillar atop the hill, as per an existing order of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.
